Quick Show Notes – COVID-19 Texas Response, El Paso Mass Shooting & More, with Dr. Bill Weiss
In this episode we talk with Dr. William Michael Weiss who specializes in Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine and is also affiliated with the University Medical Center Of El Paso, Texas. William gives us a look into how life was living and working in El Paso, COVID response in community, the effect on minority groups, working with the military, dealing with trauma, and more!
About Dr. Bill Weiss:
Dr. Weiss completed 2 Undergraduate Science degrees (BSc Biochemistry & BSc Human Kinetics) and a Master of Science degree (MSc Biochemistry), while being involved in athletics and becoming Nationally Certified in Coaching, Fitness Training, and Exercise Physiology. He then pursued Medical School (MD) and Residency training in Orthopedic Surgery, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC), certified in Orthopedic Surgery.
Dr. Weiss then completed his first Orthopedic Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy and Extremity Reconstruction fellowship in Canada (University of Alberta) before coming to Texas to complete a second Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship (Plano Orthopedics & Sports Medicine) accredited by the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) and the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). He then proceeded to complete a third fellowship in Orthopedic Foot, Ankle and Lower Extremity Reconstruction (University of Texas Medical Branch, UTMB) accredited by the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) before taking a position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery & Rehabilitation at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) – El Paso.
In 4 years at TTUHSC, Dr. Weiss became Director of Research and Director of Orthopedic Sports Medicine & Arthroscopy for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery & Rehabilitation, and served as Associate Research Director for the combined William Beaumont US Army Medical Center/TTUHSC Orthopedic Residency Program (the only joint military and civilian residency program in the US). He was the Medical Director of Sports Medicine for University Medical Center (UMC) of El Paso, instituting a Sports Medicine Program that allowed him to be the physician and orthopedic surgeon for numerous high school sports programs, and teams from the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP). Dr. Weiss was also the orthopedic surgeon for the El Paso Locomotive professional soccer team, and cared for active duty members of the US Army.
As TTUHSC El Paso is the only level 1 Trauma center in a roughly 300 mile radius, Dr. Weiss was also able to care for trauma patients and those with complex injuries requiring multiple ligament knee reconstructions, meniscal allograft transplantation, and complex shoulder, elbow, hip or lower extremity reconstructions relevant to both sports medicine and trauma. During his time with TTUHSC, Dr Weiss became a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (FAAOS), and was recognized with his colleagues and first-responders who responded, and cared for the victims of the El Paso shooting in 2019.
Dr. Weiss returns to UTMB with aims to further his teaching and research goals in orthopedic surgery, with a focus on sports medicine and basic science. He will also, with the assistance of his colleagues, continue the development of a Multi-Disciplinary Sports Medicine Program that focuses on education, research, and the care of athletes in the Galveston-Houston area.

He is member of numerous orthopedic, sports medicine, cartilage repair, and foot & ankle associations and committees, serving as a Board Member for the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) and the Canadian Orthopedic Association (COA). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC), a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (FAAOS), and a member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS), and International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS).

He remains a reviewer for numerous prominent sports medicine, general orthopedic surgery, and foot & ankle journals.
Dr. Weiss has published numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts on various subjects that include the basic science of immune cell in viral infection, orthopedic tissue engineering (meniscus, cartilage and bone) using stem cells and 3-dimensional printed or microgravity culture, and numerous technical manuscripts and clinical outcome studies in sports medicine, foot & ankle surgery, and orthopedic trauma. He has also authored chapters in nationally and internationally published orthopedic books covering topics in arthroscopy and sports medicine, foot & ankle surgery, general orthopedics, and care of active-duty military patients.
His research interests continue to be broad, and include biochemistry, immunology, exercise physiology, fitness training, skill acquisition and development, tissue repair and engineering (cartilage, meniscus and bone), human biomechanics, and clinical techniques and outcomes in sports medicine and orthopedics. Dr. Weiss has ongoing research collaborations with the University of Alberta, TTUHSC and UTEP that involve tissue engineering and clinical outcomes studies.
